How to use every screen of Finscious, step by step, in plain words.

Watch the 3-minute tour

The video tour is coming soon

Start here

Finscious is the Family Finance Suite for your household. Every morning it tells you one thing: what you can safely spend today.

What Finscious is

One app for your salary, your bills and your spending, that answers "what can I spend today?"

Your bank balance is not the whole story. Some of it is already promised: rent, an EMI, a premium.

You tell Finscious your salary once each payday.

It counts what you spend and what is still to be paid.

It shows what is safe to spend today.

BY DEFAULT, YOUR DATA STAYS ON YOUR PHONE

In Local-first mode, the default, the money you enter is saved on your phone, in an encrypted database. Finscious does not receive it. If you reinstall or change phones, you restore from your own backup file and your 12-word phrase. Finscious keeps neither. See "Back up and restore" below.

THE ONE HABIT

On every payday, open Plan and split your salary into the five envelopes. That is the only regular task.

The five tabs

The bar at the bottom has five tabs.

Today

What you can safely spend today. The + button that adds a spend is here.

Plan

Your salary, split into five envelopes, and how much of each is used.

Money

Every spend and every credit, and pictures of where your money goes.

Net Worth

What you own minus what you owe, your holdings and your loans.

Menu

Everything else: Before you spend, Scheduled, Cash, Vyom Score, Insights, Financial Plan, Loan Calculators and Settings.

Your first ten minutes

1.

Open the app and sign in with Google.

2.

Allow notifications. Allow SMS reading if you want bank messages captured. You can skip it.

3.

Open Plan, then the Set Plan tab. Enter your salary and split it across the five envelopes.

4.

Open Menu, then Scheduled. Add rent and your EMIs.

5.

Go back to Today. You now have your first number.

The first time you open it

A few short screens come before your first number.

What you will see

1.

Five short lines explain the idea. Tap through them.

2.

Sign in with Google. Finscious takes your name and email. There is no password.

3.

Choose which permissions to allow. Both are optional.

4.

Read the last screen, "One thing before you start". Confirm you are 18 or older and tick to accept.

5.

You land on Today.

Permissions

Say no to any of them. The app still works.

Notifications

For bill reminders, a note when a bank message is captured, and one evening summary.

Reading SMS

To capture bank transaction messages on your phone. Without it you add spends by hand.

Fingerprint, face or PIN

Only if you turn on App Lock in Settings.

Today

The first tab. It answers one question.

The Today screen

From top to bottom.

Top bar

Today's date. The bell scrolls to your notes. The PDF icon makes a PDF report.

Greeting and Vyom chip

Tap the chip to open your Vyom Score.

Notes

Short notes from Finscious. Tap Not now to hide one.

Actually spent today

The big card. It shows what you have spent today, and under it: Safe to spend, Can spend, Days left and Available.

Tomorrow

A chip that shows tomorrow's number, so you can see what today's spending does to it.

Before you spend

A card with a Check an offer button. See "Before you spend".

Cash

Tap it to count your wallet. See "Cash".

This cycle

Your income, your spending and your balance since payday, and how many days are left.

Needs attention

Any envelope that is nearly used up or over.

Envelope consumption

One ring for each of the five envelopes.

Due today & tomorrow

Bills from Scheduled that fall on those days.

Pull down to refresh.

If no bank message has arrived for several days, a card asks you to check that SMS permission is on and battery saving is not stopping the app.

The numbers on the big card

Safe to spend

The amount for today if the rest of the cycle is to work out.

Can spend

The most you could spend today without hurting the days after.

Available

What is left for everyday spending until your next payday, after bills that are still to come.

Days left

Days until your next payday.

A line under the card says why the number is what it is. For example, a Saturday may get more if your Saturdays usually cost more. If you have overspent, it says so and shows what is left. The number moves in small steps, not jumps.

THE DAY RUNS 6 A.M. TO 6 A.M.

A late dinner and the taxi home after midnight count as one evening. A spend you add by hand keeps the date you choose.

Add a spend

Tap the + button, bottom right of Today. Only Today has it.

To add something that has already happened

1.

Choose "Done / Past".

2.

Pick the date. It starts as today.

3.

Choose Debit (money out) or Credit (money in).

4.

For a debit, say if it was cash or online / bank.

5.

Enter the amount.

6.

Pick the envelope, then the category.

7.

Add a note if you like. Tap Save.

To add something that is coming

1.

Choose "Plan to do / Future".

2.

Fill in the Scheduled form. See "Scheduled".

To fix a spend, open Money, tap it, then Edit or Re-categorise.

A spend taken from a bank message keeps its amount, date and shop. You can change how it is filed, or delete it.

Money coming in

When you choose Credit, Finscious asks where the money goes.

Add to Monthly Plan

It raises what you can spend this cycle. Only Needs and Wants go up. Loans, Investments and Insurance stay as they are.

Add to Net Worth

You pick the asset it adds to. What you can spend today does not change.

I sold an asset

You pick the asset. It goes down by that amount. Then Finscious asks: does this money add to your plan? Answer No, Yes, or "Put it toward a Task".

WHY IT ASKS

Only you know if sale money is already promised. Finscious never assumes you can spend more.

Plan

The second tab. Your salary, split into five envelopes.

The five envelopes

Every rupee of a salary goes into one of five envelopes.

Needs

Rent, groceries, bills, medicine, transport, school. Feeds the daily number.

Wants

Eating out, films, travel, clothes, gadgets, subscriptions. Feeds the daily number.

Investments

Mutual funds, shares, deposits, provident funds, gold, property. Raises your net worth on its own.

Loans

EMIs and credit card payments. Already decided, so it never enters the daily number.

Insurance

Life, health, motor, home and other premiums. Already decided too.

WHY ONLY TWO FEED THE DAILY NUMBER

An EMI is not spending. It is money already promised. Only Needs and Wants are money you can choose to spend, so only they make the daily number.

The three Plan tabs

Overview

One bar for each envelope: spent out of allocated. Money you added to your plan this cycle shows at the top. Past cycles are listed below.

Understand

Plain cards: plan against what really happened, what keeps drifting, what is covered before your next salary, how steady your salary is, and a split that fits what you do.

Set Plan

Where you enter your salary and split it.

Set your plan on payday

1.

Open Plan, then the Set Plan tab.

2.

Under "Apply this to", choose This cycle or Next cycle.

3.

Enter your Monthly Salary and your Salary Date.

4.

Set a percentage for each envelope. The total must be 100.

5.

Tap Save.

A payday to the next is one salary cycle. It is not the calendar month.

On your first day, if today is not payday, enter the money you have in hand instead of your full salary. Do this for that one cycle only.

The lock and Edit Plan

After you save, the split locks. You see a padlock and an Edit Plan button. Changing it mid-cycle moves money you may already have spent.

To change it

1.

Tap Edit Plan.

2.

On your payday it unlocks at once.

3.

On any other day, confirm once. Then change the split.

4.

Tap Save. Today's number is worked out again.

Money

The third tab. Every spend and every credit.

Understand and Ledger

Understand

Pick This cycle, This month or Last 3 months. Then read the cards: This period, On track?, What changed, Where it went (tap a category to open it), Your merchants, Recurring payments, The shape of it, and How complete this is.

Ledger

Every transaction, newest first. Filter by All, Envelope, Amount or Date.

To change or delete a transaction

1.

Open the Ledger tab and tap the transaction.

2.

Tap Edit, Re-categorise or Delete.

3.

To delete many, tap the select icon, tick them, and tap Delete.

A transaction that is not filed yet says "Uncategorised — tap to categorise". Tap it and pick an envelope. Deleting a transaction also undoes any Net Worth change it made.

Bank messages, captured for you

With SMS permission on, Finscious reads bank messages on your phone and adds the transaction.

A notification says what was captured.

It says either "Filed as ... — tap to change" or "Uncategorised — tap to categorise".

Every uncategorised one waits in Money until you file it.

The message is read on your phone. Its text stays there.

To turn capture off

1.

Open Menu, then Settings.

2.

Turn off Automatic SMS Capture.

Filing that remembers you

When you file the same shop the same way a few times, Finscious files it that way from then on.

It learns only from your own choices. There is no built-in list of shops.

Filed automatically? The row is marked "auto".

If you file a shop two ways, it keeps asking.

To change your mind, re-categorise the transaction. It counts at once.

Cash: count your wallet

Cash is the one thing Finscious cannot see. So you look.

1.

Tap the Cash card on Today. Or open Menu, then Cash, then the count icon.

2.

Tap the notes you have. Finscious adds them up.

3.

If you took cash out since your last count, say so.

4.

Choose how the spending divides into categories. Save.

You enter what you hold, not what you spent. The gap from your last count is what went.

It is spread over the days it covers and saved as ordinary transactions.

Between counts, the wallet figure is an estimate and says so.

Counting again the same day replaces the earlier count.

Menu, then Cash, lists your counts. Remove one with the bin icon.

Net Worth

The fourth tab. What you own, what you owe.

Overview, Holdings and Debt

Overview

Your net worth at the top. Pick 1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y or All. Below: a trend line, what moved it, where your money sits, and how quickly you could reach it. Then every category, one tile each.

Holdings

Each investment, its value and its gain or loss.

Debt

Each loan, what is still owed, and its payoff date.

Eight assets, eight liabilities

Assets

Cash in Hand · FD / PPF · Investments · Real Estate · Vehicles · Gold · Business · Other Assets

Liabilities

Home Loan · Vehicle Loan · Education Loan · Personal Loan · Credit Card · Gold Loan · Business Loan · Other Liabilities

Cash in Hand comes from your wallet counts. You cannot type it in.

Pull down to refresh gold, mutual fund and share prices. Only the instrument is looked up, not who holds it.

Add, update and pay down

To add or change a holding or a loan

1.

On the Overview tab, tap the category.

2.

Add a holding or a loan, or change one.

3.

Adding a loan's real rate and months left lets Finscious show the date you will be free of it.

To pay extra on a loan

1.

Open the Debt tab and tap the loan.

2.

Tap "Record a principal payment" and enter the amount.

3.

The balance drops and your net worth updates.

IT ALSO UPDATES ITSELF

Pay an EMI under Loans and that loan goes down. Log an investment under Investments and the matching asset goes up. You do nothing more.

Before you spend

For when your family is about to pay for something big. Everything in this chapter is worked out on your phone and stays on it.

What it is and where it lives

It shows what an offer really costs, in rupees, before you say yes.

On Today, the "Before you spend" card has a Check an offer button.

In Menu, the top group, "Before you spend", has four tiles: Check an offer, Your family picture, Patterns & rules, and Decisions & follow-ups.

It states facts and gives you choices. It does not tell you what to buy. It does not judge a seller.

It does not name any fund, company or lender.

Your family picture

Tell Finscious what your family is carrying. It shows your next 24 months.

To set it up

1.

Open Menu, then Before you spend, then Your family picture. Or tap Tell Finscious on Today.

2.

Answer the questions one by one. There are eleven. Tap Skip this to leave one out. Each answer is saved as you go.

3.

Tap "See my 24 months".

The questions, in order

Regular bills

Rent, an EMI, school fees. Pre-filled from your app.

Regular costs with no fixed date

Servicing, routine check-ups.

One-time costs with a date

A fee, a wedding in a known year.

Big costs with no date yet

Care for parents, a child's studies.

Things that could happen

An illness, a job loss. You say if it is covered.

Promises you keep

Money you send home, even if it is on no list.

What would you give up for what?

You mark how hard each item would be to miss.

Who is in your family

The people you support or share money with.

What comes in

Salary and other monthly money, and how sure it is.

What your family holds

Savings and assets, sorted by how fast they can turn into money.

Your floor

The least you always want to keep. It starts at one month of your Needs.

The result shows a chart of your money at the end of each month, with your floor as a line.

Each month is tagged above or below your floor. A month below it has a card that lists what falls due in it.

Costs with no date sit under "Not yet placed".

The list "What we assumed" shows every assumption.

On Today, one line names your tightest month. Tap it to open the picture.

To change an answer, tap "Change what my family is carrying".

Check an offer

Type in an offer and see what it really costs.

1.

Tap Check an offer, on Today or in Menu.

2.

Fill it in yourself: choose the payment option, then the amounts. Options are Pay in full, 'No-cost' EMI, Card EMI, Loan and Flat-rate quote.

3.

Tap Check this offer.

Leave a field blank if the offer does not say. A usual value is used and shown under Assumptions.

Nothing is worked out until you confirm the fields.

Read the result

The top line

One plain fact. For example, that a 'no-cost' EMI costs a stated amount more than paying in full, or that a loan costs about so much a year.

Your family

Whether any month falls below your floor if you take this.

Ways to do this

Other ways to pay, each with its extra cost and its effect on your months.

The full breakdown

Price if paid in full, interest, GST on the interest, processing fee with GST, total you pay, extra over paying in full, and the yearly rate.

Assumptions

Tap Change on one and everything is worked out again.

Tap "I'll go with this" on a way you choose. Or tap Another way and write your own.

It is saved on your phone. Finscious will ask how it went in 30 days.

Other buttons: Edit the offer and Share this check.

Decisions and follow-ups

1.

Open Menu, then Decisions & follow-ups. Every saved decision is listed with its date.

2.

When one is due, tap "How did it go?".

3.

Choose "It went fine", "It was tight" or "I regret it". Add a note if you like. Tap Save how it went.

Tap a decision to see your choice and the ways we showed.

Delete removes it from your phone, with its follow-up.

Patterns and rules

A calm look at what repeats, and rules you write yourself.

Open Menu, then Patterns & rules.

A place that shows up 6 or more times in a month appears here, with what it comes to over a year.

You can compare a year of it with something you are saving for.

Tap "Set a rule for this" to turn a pattern into a rule.

To add a rule

1.

Tap Add a rule.

2.

Write it in your words. Add an amount and a week or month if you want.

3.

Turn on Remind me and pick a time, if you want a reminder.

4.

Tap Save rule.

A rule is yours. Change it or delete it any time.

Turn on "Send me the weekly look" for a quiet weekly review. Pick its day and time.

Family notes

A few calm notes, only when something is coming: your month before you spend it, a tight month ahead, a cannot-miss payment, a renewal, a payment that changed, a follow-up, and your weekly look. They arrive when you open the app.

To change them

1.

Open Menu, then Settings, then the Family notes group.

2.

Turn them off, set Quiet from and Quiet until, or set Notes per week.

3.

Set the weekly review day and time.

Share a check

1.

On a result, tap Share this check.

2.

A preview shows exactly what will go out. It has only the offer's figures. Nothing about your family.

3.

Tap Share and choose the app. Or tap Not now.

Your family data

It is on your phone, inside the encrypted database, and in your backup.

In Settings, Export my events (CSV) gives you counts only. No amounts, no names.

In Settings, Delete my family data clears the people, costs, holdings, decisions, rules and notes. The rest of Finscious stays.

Menu tools

The fifth tab. Everything else.

Scheduled

Bills, EMIs, subscriptions and income you expect.

To add one

1.

Open Menu, then Scheduled. Tap +. Or choose "Plan to do / Future" from the + on Today.

2.

Choose Bill (money out) or Expected income.

3.

Enter the name and amount.

4.

Choose how often: One Time, Daily, Weekdays, Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly, Quarterly, Half Yearly or Yearly.

5.

Turn on Mandatory if it must be paid. Its money is set aside before your daily number is worked out.

6.

Tap Add to Scheduled.

Upcoming lists them under Overdue, This week and This month. Calendar shows them by day.

Tap the tick to mark one paid. When a matching payment arrives, Finscious ticks it for you.

Reminders depend on the amount

Above ₹20,000

Reminded 10 days, 5 days and 1 day before.

₹5,000 to ₹20,000

Reminded 5 days and 1 day before.

Below ₹5,000

Reminded 1 day before.

Vyom Score

A 0 to 1000 score for your money habits over the last 30 days. It is not a credit score.

The nine factors

Savings Rate (20%)

What you keep out of what you earn.

Budget Adherence (15%)

Spending against your own split.

Discretionary Discipline (12%)

Needs against lifestyle spending.

Spending Consistency (10%)

How steady your days are against your own weekly pattern.

Net Worth Trajectory (10%)

The direction of the last 30 days.

Plan Adherence (10%)

What you spent against the number shown that morning.

Debt Paydown (10%)

Loan principal you repaid, against income.

Emergency Fund (8%)

Your cash and FD / PPF, in months of your own spending.

Investing Regularity (5%)

How many weeks had an investment. Weeks count, not rupees.

Bands

Elite

800 and above

Excellent

650 to 799

Good

500 to 649

Fair

350 to 499

Needs Improvement

below 350

It needs at least 3 transactions on 2 different days. Until then it says "building".

A factor with nothing to measure is left out. No loans means no Debt Paydown factor.

Bank messages you never filed can hold the score down. File them and it lifts.

It is private. It has nothing to do with CIBIL or any lender.

Insights

Three tabs: Noticed, Digests and Reports.

Noticed

Things Finscious found on its own. For example, bills piling into the same days, a payment your income may not cover, how many months you could last without income, many small spends, and costly weekends. Each shows the sum behind it. It stays empty when there is nothing to say.

Digests

Short weekly and monthly summaries of what changed. The digest history keeps them all.

Reports

Your income and spending in plain words, over weeks or months. Tabs: Summary, Spending mix and Periods. Tap Export CSV or Download PDF report.

The same PDF report is one tap away on Today: the PDF icon at the top.

Financial Plan

What your Investments envelope does each month: fund your Tasks and clear loan principal.

To add a Task

1.

Open Menu, then Financial Plan. Tap +.

2.

Say what it is, how much you need and the date.

3.

Say if the date can move or cannot.

4.

Tap Save.

A date that cannot move is funded first. Then loans above 12% a year. Then everything else, on equal terms.

Each line says why it was funded and how much you have paid this cycle.

If your Tasks need more than your Investments envelope holds, it says so and lists what would close the gap.

It needs no setup. Your loans are already in Net Worth.

Tap a Task or a debt to open its own screen.

ESTIMATES

Projections come from the numbers you gave. They are not a promise from your lender. Your bank statement is always right.

Loan Calculators

A what-if pad for a loan. Nothing here is saved.

EMI

What a loan costs each month.

Compare

Two loans side by side.

Prepay

Months and interest saved by paying extra.

Afford

The largest loan a monthly payment can carry.

To really reduce a loan, use "Record a principal payment" on the Debt tab of Net Worth.

Settings, backup and help

Open Menu, then Settings.

What is in Settings

Help

Guide: how to use Finscious, read aloud if you tap the headphones.

Notifications

Loud alerts on or off.

Security

App Lock adds your fingerprint, face or phone PIN.

Profile

Your name and email.

To back up

1.

Open Settings, then Back up now.

2.

Write down the 12 words shown.

3.

Type back three of them when asked.

4.

Save the encrypted file where you choose: your storage, your Drive, or email.

To restore on a new or wiped phone

1.

Sign in. Open Settings, then Restore from backup.

2.

Pick your backup file.

3.

Enter your 12 words.

KEEP BOTH

Finscious cannot restore a backup without the 12 words. It never receives your file or your words. Keep the words apart from the file. Uninstalling the app can remove your data, so back up first.

Export and delete

Export what Finscious holds

A copy of your name, email and consent records from our server. Your money data is not there.

Delete My Account

Schedules deletion in 30 days of what we hold: your name, email and consent records. Tap Cancel deletion in Settings to stop it. Signing in again does not stop it. Your money data is on your phone, so uninstalling or clearing the app is what removes it. Back up first if you want to keep it.

Notifications

Three kinds, and no more.

Bill reminders

From Scheduled, ahead of the due date.

Transaction captured

When a bank message arrives: what was captured, and how it was filed.

The evening summary

Once a day: what is coming and anything waiting for a tap.

Your family notes are separate. See "Family notes". On the lock screen, the amounts stay hidden until you unlock.

If something is wrong

Bank messages are not captured

Check that SMS permission is on in your phone settings, and that battery saving is not stopping Finscious.

No notifications

Check notification permission and battery settings for Finscious.

Sign-in fails

Use the Google account you first signed in with.

Update notice

The app checks once a day. An older version can be put off. A version that no longer works cannot.
